Canada has a reputation worldwide as being a polite nation filled with kind and good-natured people, but it may surprise people (or not, depending on how much of this blog you have read) to know that we have our share of sick and depraved criminals.

Take, for example, the case of Leopold Dion. Leopold was a serial rapist and murderer active in the mid-'60s in Quebec.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that is a wonder to behold, and one of the best places to see them is in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Yellowknife attracts a large number of tourists during the winter season, who are drawn to catch a glimpse of the beautiful lights.

Japanese tourists constitute a large number of the people visiting Yellowknife to see the Northern Lights. Estimated roughly 20% of the tourists coming to Yellowknife are from Japan. One such tourist was Atsumi Yoshikubo, a licenced psychiatrist who, in October of 2014 decided to visit Yellowknife to see the Northern Lights.

Jesse Galganov - Missing Canadian Hiker

Jesse Galganov is a bright young man who intended to go to med school in Philadelphia after taking a year off of school to travel the world. Jesse is a dual citizen of the US and Canada and lived with his mother in Montreal.

Jesse's plan was to go backpacking throughout South America and Southeast Asia, with his first stop being Peru where he would hike the famous Santa Cruz trail. Jesse was an experienced traveler and hiker, and it was a dream of his to hike this trail. At points, this trail can reach 15000' above sea level and isn't for novice hikers.

On September 24, 2017, Jesse left Montreal and headed to his first stop in Peru. Jesse texted his mom Alisa on September 28 and told her that he was leaving to hike the Santa Cruz trail and wouldn't be able to text her for a few days, but he said that he would be sure to text her by October 2nd.

Alisa became alarmed when Jesse did not text her by the 2nd and quickly notified the authorities of her son's disappearance.


Unfortunately, to this date, Jesse's whereabouts are unknown.

The Longest Sentence in Ontario History - Dellen Millard

Dellen Millard was born in Toronto, 1985. He was the only son of wealthy parents, and as an adult, he was set to take over his father's successful aviation repair business. At 14 years old he was the youngest in Canada to take solo flights in one day in a helicopter and an airplane. He seemed to have everything going for him, but inside him lurked an evil that would eventually claim 3 lives.

Even though Dellen's potential was bright, he chased the thrill of living dangerously. He dropped out of college and started doing drugs, progressing to harder and harder drugs. Dellen would fund drug and alcohol-fueled parties. His lifestyle attracted people who wanted to live that "gangsta" life.

Mark Smich

Enter Mark Smich, a thug and wannabe rapper. With awesome lyrics like:
"Blues clues, talk to the cops and die on the news. Peace bitch". Mark was also a petty criminal and drug dealer who would turn out to be Dellen's sidekick and lapdog.

Peter Woodcock - Canada's Youngest Serial Killer

The story of the child murderer and serial killer Peter Woodcock is not for the faint of heart. If reading about subjects like this makes you squeamish, please don't read any further.

Peter Woodcock was born in Peterborough, Ontario in 1939. His mother was a young 17-year-old factory worker and she had difficulty with the child. He would not eat and cried constantly. At a month old his mother gave him up for adoption.

Peter continued to cry all the time and would screech whenever someone approached him. He would be bounced around between temporary foster homes, to prevent him from forming an attachment to any particular family until a more permanent home could be found.

By his first birthday, he was still terrified of people and his speech was described as strange whining animal noises. He suffered abuse in these early days at the hands of his temporary foster parents, having had to go to the hospital for a neck injury at 2 years old after a beating.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer

When a family member has to go into assisted living, or "end of life" care, you trust that the caregivers looking after your loved ones have their best interests at heart. Chances are if your end of life caregiver was Elizabeth Wettlaufer, your end of life would come sooner than expected.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer was a registered nurse in Southern Ontario that admitted to murdering 8 seniors and attempting to murder 6 others during the years of 2007 and 2016. She would inject lethal doses of insulin into her victims, ensuring a prolonged complicated death.

Her first known crimes began when she worked as a nurse at Caressant Care in Woodstock, Ontario. She would admit to injecting two of the patients, Clotilde Adriano and Albina Demedeiros with insulin but at this point, she didn't know the correct amount for a lethal dosage. They would later pass, but it was not connected to the overdose of insulin.

Wayne Boden - The Vampire Rapist

In 1967, Montreal was booming. People from all over the country had traveled to Montreal for the 1967 Expo. In 1969 was the year of a violent race-related riot at Sir George Williams University, where students accused staff of unfair grading due to the race of the students. It resulted in nearly 100 people arrested after students set fire to the university's computer and burned documents and punch cards.

This was the backdrop at the time a predator named Wayne Boden, also known as the Vampire Rapist, stalked the young women of Montreal. In the late 60s, Montreal had about 1 homicide per week. Wayne Boden was counting on his victims to blend in with the other murders happening around the city at the time.

Unfortunately, the civilian attention span when it came to the murders in Montreal was fairly short. It almost became like just statistics and not the reality that these were real people.

In July 1968 Norma Vaillancourt, a 21 year old teacher was found dead in her apartment after she had failed to show up for work. She had been strangled and raped, and her body bore vicious bite marks on her breast. The police decided not to release the information on the bite marks to the public. Unfortunately, all persons of interest were ruled out and investigators hit a dead end.

In October of 1969, a woman named Shirley Audette was found dead at the rear of an apartment complex. In the alley that went from the side of the apartment to the rear of the building, her fully clothed body was found at the bottom of the fire escape. The manner of death wasn't readily apparent to the first on the scene.

Who is Bruce McArthur?

In 2010, the LGBT community in Toronto began to fear that there might be a predator in their midst. Described as an LGBT enclave, Church and Wellesley is known as Toronto's gay village. Protective of their people, they noticed that young men were going missing and no one knew what was going on. Did they move? Did something bad happen?

The LGBT people in Church and Wellesley demanded an investigation into their missing people. In 2012, after years of petitioning the police to figure out what was happening, Toronto Police Services started an investigation they called Project Houston.

Originally started as an investigation into the disappearance of Skandaraj "Skanda" Navaratnam, who went missing in September 2010. Project Houston began due to a post on a "Cannibal" website where a poster admitted to killing and eating a man in Toronto, 2010. This info was later dismissed, Riverdale park was searched with friends of Navaratnam and cadaver dogs, but there were no leads.

Missing Family from Prince George

The Jack Family

In 1989 the Jack family, a family of 4, of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation went missing from Prince George BC. Ronald and Doreen Jack are the parents of Russell, age 9, and Ryan, age 4. All four of them seemingly vanished that year in 1989.

On August 2, 1989, Ronald called his mother in Burns Lake to tell her that he and his wife Doreen had got jobs at a logging camp. And that is the last time anyone has seen or heard of the Jack family.

Ronald had said that he met a man at a local bar who told him about the jobs available at the camp, but time was an issue and they would have to leave right away if they were to take advantage of the opportunity. As a young family where money was tight, Ronald was excited about his luck meeting this man that provided the information.

Allan Legere - Monster of the Miramichi

Allan Legere was born on the 13th of February, 1948, in Chatham, New Brunswick. A large imposing man, he was also known as the Monster of the Miramichi. Looking into Allan's life as a youth, you could tell that in his later years Allan would be in trouble with the law. His father wasn't in the picture, and his stepdad, left one night to go to the store and never returned. 

His deviant sexual behavior showed itself early in life. His family was not well off; his family supported by his single mother. Allan was crammed into a single room that he shared with his sisters. In Allan's own words, he would often masturbate while watching his sisters undress. This behavior continued as Allan got older, evolving into peeping into woman's rooms while masturbating.

He liked to work out and was proud of his physique. He was a tall muscular man, and if you imagine what Paul Bunyan might have looked like, chances are you would imagine someone that looked similar to Allan.

The Happy Face Killer - Keith Hunter Jesperson

Keith Hunter Jesperson was born in Chilliwack, BC in 1955. As a child, he displayed the typical behavior of someone who would grow up to be a serial killer. He was cruel and abusive to animals and enjoyed torturing and killing them. Often he would make animals fight and kill each other for his amusement.

In Keith's own words, he came from an abusive home. His father was an alcoholic and often violent with his children, as was his grandfather. Keith was a large child and often faced teasing from other children, and was treated like an outcast even by his own family. He showed vindictive tendencies, feeling like he needed to retaliate against every slight against him. Twice as a child he tried to kill his classmates. One boy, he beat badly until his father pulled him away, and later Keith admitted that he was attempting to kill the boy. In another incident, a different boy had held Keiths head under water when swimming till he blacked out. In retaliation, when swimming in a public pool, Keith tried to drown the boy and would have if a lifeguard hadn't stopped him.

The Paper Bag Rapist - John Horace Oughton

It was a sunny day in Vancouver on April 26, 1981. Carmen Aguirre and her cousin Macarena were walking along a trail in the University of British Columbia Endowment Lands, giggling and talking about boys. Typical 13-year-old girl type of stuff. They were looking to share a smoke that Carmen had snuck from her dad's pack of cigarettes.

As they walked down the trail they heard a twig snap behind them. Freezing in fear, they thought that they were somehow busted for the cigarette. The reality was far worse.

"Put your hands on your head, turn around, and don’t look back.", a man's voice said behind them. "Don’t try to run. I have a gun and I will shoot you. Do as I say."

"Put your hands on her shoulders and walk. If either of you turn around, I’ll shoot." "Walk! I have the gun to your sister’s head and I’ll shoot her if you don’t walk. Off the trail, into the bush. Now."

The two girls had the misfortune to have met a man named John Horace Oughton. A man that was dubbed by the media as "The Paper Bag Rapist".

Murdered Unidentified Children - The Babes in the Woods

In Vancouver's Stanley Park, January 1953, gardener Albert Tong went about his duties clearing brush by an area near Beaver Lake when he found a tragic scene. After clearing some brush he discovered a decomposing fur coat under which were the bones of two young children.

Murder of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg

In November 1987, high school sweethearts Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg decided that they wanted to travel from their hometown of Sanich, BC, to Seattle, Washington. Sanich is located on Vancouver Island, so this trip required that they take a ferry from Victoria, BC to Port Angeles. After a short drive to Bremerton, Washington, they needed to take a second ferry to their final destination of Seattle. They borrowed Jay's fathers 1977 Ford Club Van for the drive. Sanich and Seattle aren't too far away from each other and the couple was due back home the next day.

Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg

They left home on November 18, 1987, took the first ferry and then drove to Bremerton. Jay and Tanya bought tickets for the second ferry, and that was the last time they were seen alive again.

When they didn't return home on the 19th, their parents waited nervously by the phone, hoping to get a call from them saying they had been delayed. But that sinking feeling got bigger when they still did not hear from the couple by the 20th. Their parents decided to call the police and report them missing
on the 20th.

On November 24th, Tanya Van Cuylenborg's half-naked body was found in a ditch near Alger, Washington, a short distance south of Bellingham. Zip ties bound her hands behind her back, she had been raped and shot in the back of the head with a .38 caliber gun.

The next day, on the 25th. Tanya's wallet and keys were found at a Greyhound bus station in Bellingham. Nearby, the van that Jay and Tanya were driving was found. When the van was searched, police found zip ties, the same kind that was used to bind Tanya, and plastic gloves. Investigators thought that the killer left the plastic gloves in plain sight as a taunt, saying "You won't find any prints because I wore these".
